Waiheke on a Cruise Ship Day

1 November 2026

A private shore excursion, back in good time

Lunch at Mudbrick Vineyard looking across the Hauraki Gulf to Auckland

If your ship is in Auckland for the day, Waiheke Island is the shore excursion locals would choose: vineyards, olive groves and beaches, 40 minutes from the cruise terminal by ferry. The only real question is time, so here's how to fit it in without watching the clock.

Getting from your ship to Waiheke

Most cruise ships berth in central Auckland, a short walk from the Downtown Ferry Terminal. Ferries run from there to Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke in about 40 minutes. Island Direct, the island's locally owned ferry, leaves from Pier 13. We'll suggest the right sailing for your ship's times when we confirm your day.

Will we be back in time?

This is what our West-End Icons Tour was built for. It runs five hours (10am to 3pm, or 11am to 4pm), keeps the drives short and the stops close together, and ends at Mudbrick, about five minutes from the ferry. Tell us your all-aboard time when you book and we'll plan backwards from it, with a comfortable margin.

What the day looks like

  • Allpress Olive Groves: extra virgin olive oil, mānuka honey and island condiments, before the cellar doors open at 11am.
  • The Onetangi Valley: tastings along the "Golden Mile", where more than nine vineyards share one road, including Michelin-starred Tantalus Estate.
  • Lunch with a view: your pick, booked before you arrive.
  • Mudbrick to finish: gardens, lavender and the Auckland skyline across the water, then a short drive to the ferry.

Why private rather than the ship's excursion?

It's just your group, up to four guests, so two couples from the same ship can share the day. Nobody waits for a coach, the stops are chosen around what you like to drink, and your guide and 4WD are yours for the whole tour, so their only job is getting you back on time.

Prices

From NZ$499 per person for two guests, or NZ$469 each for three or four, including GST and booking fees. Tastings can be added when you book or paid as you go. Lunch and the ferry are paid separately.
