Waiheke Day Trip from Auckland: 3 Easy Ways to Spend It

1 November 2026

Ferry times, how long you need, and three easy days

Onetangi Beach, Waiheke Island

Waiheke is 40 minutes from downtown Auckland by ferry, which makes it one of the easiest day trips in New Zealand, and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong. The island is bigger than it looks, the best vineyards are spread across it, and the buses don't wait for a second glass. Here's how we'd plan your day, from people who live here.

Getting there

Ferries leave from the Downtown Ferry Terminal in central Auckland and arrive at Matiatia Wharf, about 40 minutes later. We recommend Island Direct, Waiheke's locally owned ferry, from Pier 13: the 9:15am sailing suits a 10am start on the island, and the 10:15am suits an 11am start. Fullers360 runs the same route if Island Direct is full, and on busy summer days its Waiheke Reserve service lets you pre-book a seat.

Book your morning sailing early in summer. Wait to book your return until your day is planned, so you're not cutting lunch short to catch a boat.

How long do you need?

  • Five hours is enough for a good first taste: two or three tastings, lunch and a beach.
  • Six hours lets you reach the far end of the island, where it's quieter and wilder.
  • A full day means you see the whole island without watching the clock.

On the summer timetable, ferries run back to Auckland until after 10pm every night, so you can stay on for dinner.

Day 1: Five easy hours on the west end

Best for a first visit, a short stay or a cruise day.

Start with olive oil and mānuka honey at Allpress Olive Groves (cellar doors open at 11am, so this is the perfect first stop). Then the Onetangi Valley's "Golden Mile", where more than nine vineyards share one road: a sommelier-led tasting at Tantalus Estate, lunch at your pick, and a walk on Onetangi Beach, Waiheke's longest. Finish at Mudbrick with the Auckland skyline across the water, back in good time for your ferry.

This is our West-End Icons Tour: 5 hours, from NZ$499 per person.

Day 2: The wild far end and Man O' War

Best for return visitors and scenery lovers.

Take the coast road east, past bays most visitors never see, to Man O' War, a vineyard on its own bay, for lunch by the water. Afterwards, reserve tastings at Passage Rock, a glass among the vines at Jasper Ridge, or gin with one of the best views on the island at Waiheke Distilling Co. Come home along the quiet south-east road. (Prefer to get there under your own steam? Here's every way to reach Man O' War.)

This is our Epic Far-End Tour: 6 hours, from NZ$599 per person.

Day 3: The whole island, all day

Best for special occasions and food lovers.

Four or five stops from the west-end vineyards to the far end, with a long lunch in the middle (Mudbrick and Tantalus Estate both received a Michelin star in 2026). Add a coastal or bush walk, an artist's studio or a swim. Every stop is yours to choose.

This is our Ultimate Freedom Tour: 7+ hours, from NZ$699 per person.

Can you do Waiheke without a tour?

Yes. The island has buses, taxis and hire cars, and plenty of people do it themselves. What a private tour adds is time: no waiting for buses between vineyards, no one in your group missing out because they're driving, and tastings and lunch booked before you land. With just your group in the car (up to four guests), the day goes at your pace.

Quick answers

Is the ferry included in a tour? No, you book it yourself, and we meet you at Matiatia with your name on a sign.

What does a tour cost? From NZ$499 per person for five hours, including GST and booking fees. Tastings, lunch and the ferry are paid separately. Groups of three or four pay less each.

Can kids come? Yes. Children up to 11 are free (they count toward the four seats), and there are beaches, playgrounds and olive oil to keep them busy.
